A slot is a place where you can put something, usually money. Slots are found on most slot machines and can be used to win big jackpots. Slots also appear in the game of poker and are used by players to place bets. The word slot is also used to describe a position on a team or in a game. For example, a player who is in the slot is positioned closer to the CB and will be able to cover more ground than a player in another position.

A special type of table slot, the periodic slot is used to hold data that repeats at a regular time interval, such as a set of monthly evaporation coefficients for a reservoir. Periodic slots can contain both regular and irregular timeseries, and have text or numeric column headings.

The scalar slot dialog is the default interface for scalar data. This allows a user to select a single value that is then converted to an integer and displayed in the model. There are several configuration options for scalar slots, including units and display format. In general, these are the same as for other types of slots. For more information on configuring slots, see the View menu.

Series slots are the most common type of slot in the software. A series slot contains a number of time-series values, each representing a point in time. The slot is displayed in the Slot Viewer, and it appears with a special ornamentation in the column header, as shown in Figure 6.8. This icon indicates that the slot is a Series Slot with Expression and has additional configuration options. Series Slots with Periodic Input are also displayed in the Slot Viewer, and they have an additional icon/button in the column header that can be clicked to open the slot in its own dialog and edit the periodic input values.

In the early days of slot machines, each stop on a physical reel had a specific weight assigned to it, meaning that certain symbols were more likely to appear than others. This was intended to balance the odds of winning and losing. In later years, manufacturers introduced electronic control systems to adjust the weighting of individual symbols. These allowed them to produce different combinations of symbols, increasing the odds of winning and decreasing the chances of losing.
